Battery-Free Scanning with Honeywell’s Xenon 1902g-bf

Posted June 23, 2017

The Honeywell Xenon 1902g-bf area-imager scanner incorporates the latest in battery-free technology, offering the freedom of Bluetooth low energy wireless technology without the maintenance hassles or long recharge time associated with traditional batteries. Like all other Xenon scanners, the 1902g-bf scanner delivers aggressive barcode scanning performance, even on poor-quality or damaged barcodes.

An integrated Bluetooth low-energy Class 2 radio gives users complete freedom of movement up to 10 meters (33 feet) from the base in a typical work environment. For added convenience, a paging system on the base activates auditory signals that help to locate a misplaced scanner. By eliminating the trip-hazard of tethered cables, the Xenon 1902g-bf scanner can provide a safer and more productive environment.

  • When fully charged, the Xenon 1902g-bf scanner can typically scan over 450 UPC/EAN codes without the need for recharging – more than enough to check out 25 customers during peak times, or scan a morning’s worth of overnight deliveries.
  • Super-capacitors hold their charge for hours when fully charged. So operators who forget to place their scanner in the charger prior to break won’t impact operations upon return.
  • Two fully independently configurable recharge alerts remind the operator to place the scanner back into the base for charging. The alerts can be configured to trigger at different levels of discharge and with different levels of urgency, ensuring continuous operation.
  • The Xenon 1902g-bf scanner is fully charged in under two minutes with a simple USB connection, and under 30 seconds when a powered USB or external power supply is used.
  • When a fully discharged scanner is placed in the base, the ready-to scan LED on the base will typically flash in less than 20 seconds to notify the operator that there is sufficient power to support over 5 minutes of scanning.

Honeywell AutoCube 8200 Fixed Dimensioning SystemHoneywell’s new AutoCube 8200 is a fixed dimensioning system intended to help shippers find the most cost-effective solution for so-called dimensional weight calculations required by UPS and FedEx. Under dimensional pricing, rates are determined by a parcel’s dimensions rather than its actual weight. The Honeywell tool is designed to provide more accurate measurements than traditional paper-and-pencil methods while costing less than top-shelf warehouse dimensioners.

Whether a retail store of a courier company, a shipping station of a DC, a retail ship-from-store location or an inbound station of a warehouse, the AutoCube 8200 system provides an efficient way to achieve space optimization. The AutoCube 8200 system uses 3D depth sensing technology to instantly and accurately measure the dimensions of an object. The dimensioning system consists of the dimensioner mounted on a stand and connected to a host computing system through a USB interface.

  • Measures Any Object, Any Size – Measures packages and objects in a wide range of sizes – from as small as a 10 cm (0.4 in) cube to as large as a 100 cm (39 in) cube.
  • Instant, Automatic Measurements – Sub-second measurements, automatic mode and the ability to measure objects in any orientation speeds workflows and enables users to process more customers, ship more packages and reduce labor costs.
  • Optimally Priced for Quick ROI – Innovative technology enables pricing at a level that provides a quick return on investment for courier retail counters and DC shipping stations – opening up dimensioning to more companies.
  • Flexible, Versatile and Easy to Use – The compact and flexible design, small footprint and absence of a separate power supply gives customers the freedom to easily use the AutoCube 8200 system in a wide range of environments.

Honeywell Announces Enhancements to Xenon 1900g & 1902g Scanner Series

Posted October 13, 2016

Honeywell has recently announced an important firmware update to its popular Xenon 1900g and 1902g handheld scanner families. The new firmware includes these enhancements:

  • Three new toggle modes
  • New entry-level Digimarc capable firmware in all standard Xenon 1900gs, and 1902gs
  • Two new entry level Digimarc enabled SKUs

Three New Toggle Modes

When connected directly to an iPad, smart phone, or laptop via Bluetooth HID, you can already toggle the virtual keyboard with several quick pulls of the scanner’s trigger. Now the Xenon adds these additional toggle options:

  • Scanning /imaging
  • Scanning /mobile phone
  • Full FOV /centering

The primary mode (in bold) is the default (normal mode) of operation. When the operator pulls the trigger rapidly for a configurable number of times (default is 3) the scanner will “toggle” between modes. So if the scanner is in the primary mode, it will toggle to the secondary mode, and if it is in the secondary mode, it will toggle to the primary mode. On the next trigger pull (the 4th pull if the scanner is set for the default of 3 pulls) the scanner will perform the toggled to function.

Honeywell Launches New High-Performance 8670 Wireless Ring Scanner

Posted August 3, 2016

Honeywell has released its new high-performance 8670 Wireless Ring Scanner with Bluetooth technology, a compact, lightweight scanner that fits comfortably on a finger to allow workers to keep both hands free when completing their tasks.

The new scanner uses Bluetooth technology to connect to a range of computing devices such as PCs, laptops, tablets, vehicle-mounted computers, rugged mobile computers and smartphones.

The 8670 Wireless Ring Scanner delivers high-speed decoding, motion tolerance and the ability to decode poor quality or damaged bar codes. The 2D imager can also be used as a 1D scanner and can capture small bar codes in high detail.

“By pairing this new Bluetooth ring scanner with devices such as Honeywell’s Dolphin™ 70e mobile computer or Thor VM2 vehicle-mount computer, customers can enhance productivity by enabling their workers to use both hands for a range of tasks, from picking and stocking to package handling and truck loading,” said Stan Zywicki, director, Scanning, Honeywell Sensing and Productivity Solutions. “The added benefit for businesses is that this solution works with any Bluetooth-capable host device, meaning customers are not locked into a limited set of computers.” Because the scanner is separated from the Bluetooth and battery module, the 8670 Wireless Ring Scanner is lightweight and comfortable for workers. The soft, elastomeric finger and wrist straps provide comfort, are impervious to moisture and are easily cleaned. The new ring scanner can be used across all areas of a distribution center, as well as in the field in transportation, logistics and retail environments.

Plant Access Grows Its Competitive Edge: Industry-First RFID Case Study

Posted March 14, 2016

Plant AccessIntermec IF2 RFID Readers is a specialised logistics services provider, catering for the green life industry. Plant Access provides a highly efficient service utilising a unique, innovative steel stillage design used to pick, crossdock and deliver nursery plants to Bunnings Warehouse locations across Victoria and South Australia.

Weeding out manual processes

Plant Access manages the orders and provides the steel stillages that are used to transport plant products from over 67 nursery supplier sites to Bunnings stores across Victoria and South Australia. Shipments from different suppliers are consolidated at the Plant Access cross dock facility before orders are transported to Bunnings locations and plants are sold to consumers direct out of the steel stillages.

At any one time, Plant Access has thousands of re-usable steel stillages spread across hundreds of sites throughout the supply chain. Knowing the location of all these stillages and the status of an order was a serious challenge for Plant Access under a legacy paper-based manual ordering system.

A new automated tracking system was necessary to capture real-time data from nursery supplier sites, the Plant Access cross dock logistics facility and the Bunnings stores, in order for Plant Access to have an accurate and instant visibility of their stillage assets and the products they were transporting.

CodeBroker Mobile Coupons with Honeywell 2D Scanning Solutions

Posted February 25, 2016

CodeBroker, a developer of secure mobile coupon technology for retailers looking to increase foot traffic and basket size, joined with Honeywell at this year’s National Retail Federation (NRF) annual conference.

CodeBroker had joined Honeywell Sensing and Productivity Solutions to demonstrate the ease of requesting and redeeming mobile coupons. CodeBroker has helped retailers of all sizes deliver 500 million consumer coupons via its mobile delivery and management platform.

Honeywell showcased its popular 2D scanners used by retailers to capture product and customer data at the point-of-sale (POS). The scanner works with smartphones and other mobile devices to capture barcodes for redeeming consumer coupons, tracking redemption data, and managing inventory.

Used at 24,000 retail locations, CodeBroker allows retailers to setup and deliver promotions to mobile devices in minutes, and provides a complete picture of their campaigns, enabling them to track, manage, and access promotion data.

“Show attendees had a hands-on opportunity to see how easy it is to request and redeem mobile offers. Our retailer customers have found that using mobile barcodes lets them quickly capture important data as well as improve the consumer experience by speeding up the check-out process,” said Dan Slavin, CodeBroker founder and CEO. “Our mobile engagement platform is used by retailers of all sizes to create mobile promotions that drive traffic to both online and physical stores, increasing trips and sales.

Top Ten Reasons Retailers Upgrade to Area-Imagers

Posted January 27, 2016

Traditional laser scanners read linear barcodes at the point-of-sale, a technology that greatly simplified checkout. But today’s highly developed area-imaging scanners enable greater capability and flexibility, putting far more productivity into the hands of retail employees and allowing for revenue-generating mobile marketing initiatives.

With these advantages, it’s no wonder VDC’s 2013 Report forecasts area-imaging scanners sales to grow at a rate of 13.4% for the next three years, compared to the expected 7.3% decline for laser-based scanners over the time period. Imaging technology is firmly established as a cost-effective, durable, technologically capable alternative to laser-based systems. Plus, imagers are capable of supporting retailer’s mobile marketing programs, capturing mobile coupons right off customers’ smartphone screens or automatically collecting their information from ID cards for loyalty program auto-enrollment.

Enable Revenue Generating Mobile Marketing Programs
The Internet and mobile broadband service have created new shopping channels for consumers, and new competition for brick and mortar retailers. At the same, a slow growth economy is limiting expansion of disposable income. Innovative retailers are fighting fire with fire, improving their e-commerce presence and adopting the consumer’s mobile phone as a new marketing medium. Promotions sent via SMS text message or via loyalty apps increase shopping visits, generating both immediate incremental revenue and improving long-term share of wallet. The most commonly used technology to electronically identify loyal shoppers and redeem mobile coupons are 2D barcodes rendered on mobile phone screens. And that requires a high performance, area-imaging barcode scanner at the point-of-sale.
