Replacing a Sato M5900RVe with the New CL4NX Series

Posted July 9, 2015

The SATO M-5900RVe was one of the most sought after industrial printers specifically for Direct Thermal printing. Its compact size and efficient design made it one of the most reliable printers on the market. With the discontinuation of the M-5900RVe many users will want to look to the CL4NX series as a suitable replacement.

In many cases the CL4NX is an appropriate replacement model, but due to the print head width differences it’s not always possible. This can be used as a guide to select the proper replacement model. Replacing the SATO M5900 series tabletop printer with the SATO CL4NX printer can be accomplished under the following conditions:

Print area is 4.1” or less and:

  • Media width is 5.04” (128mm) or less
  • CL4NX must be configured with 203dpi print head
  • CL4NX must be set to Direct Thermal Mode

Print area is 4.1” or more:

  • CL4NX can be used only if the printed portion of the label is reformatted to the 4.1” width.
  • CL608e must be used if the print width requires wider than 4.1” and the label cannot be reformatted.

The SATO CL4NX can use the existing M5900 media rolls (6”/152mm O.D.) provided it meets the criteria stated above, but it is now possible to use industry standard media roll size of 8”/203mm or even increase the roll capacity to 10”/254mm O.D., providing more labels per roll and less user intervention replenishing media supplies.

Friendly’s Express Improves Order Accuracy with Epson’s TM-T88 ReStick

Posted June 1, 2015

Epson TM-T88 ReStick POS PrinterFriendly’s Express is a fast-casual concept of Friendly Ice Cream Corporation, a full service family dining chain of more than 500 restaurants. Based in Wilbraham, MA, the corporation has sales of over $700 million and has strong brand recognition throughout the northeastern U.S.

Friendly‘s expands into fast-casual service

The first Friendly’s Express fast-casual restaurant opened its doors in Mansfield, Mass. “With our Friendly’s Express locations we have introduced our loyal customers to a fast, new way to order their favorite items,” commented Richard Delvalle, Director of Restaurant Systems for Friendly’s. “Their orders are prepared in a matter of minutes which is ideal for customers on the go who do not have time to eat in one of our full-service restaurants.”

New technology for fast, accurate service

To help insure that the Friendly’s Express concept would be successful, Friendly’s needed to deploy new technologies that would make food ordering, preparation and the labeling process accurate, quick and easy. Friendly’s chose to work with NETS Products Group, an Epson Envision partner, to develop a solution to meet their needs. NETS recommended Epson’s TM-T88 ReStick label solution using MAXStick liner-free labels with Friendly’s POS system. “By installing an intelligent label interface into the Epson ReStick TM-T88 printer, we were able to easily configure the point-of-sale (POS) system to print individual item labels,” said Tom Niedzwiecki, Executive Vice President of systems integrator NETS Products Group.

Datamax-O’Neil Performance Series Meets the Challenge of Small Text and Copious Data on Cryogenic Labels

Posted March 13, 2015

Datamax-O'Neil p1120n Near-Edge Thermal Barcode Label PrinterFor a leading ISO 13485:2003-certified OEM manufacturer of enzymes, meeting the rigorous demands of commercial entities engaged in the development, manufacture, and distribution of platforms dedicated to nucleic-acid identification is a daily challenge. Enzymes are critical to the performance of these applications, and the industry’s relentless pursuit of higher performance emphasizes the need for analytical-reagent purity and absolute production consistency. Operating from the perspective that they are “a manufacturing division of their customer,” the company consistently delivers the highest quality and value enzymes, leveraging them to drive customer success via a business partnership model. Part of that consistent delivery means labeling goods so that they are easily and accurately identified when they arrive in the lab.

Problem

When enzymes are manufactured, they start in batches of 50-gallon vats, and then are broken down into small vials as part of a kit sold to research and testing facilities. These vials must be labeled individually; the labels include a great deal of data, two-dimensional barcodes, and very small type. Because of the temperatures at which they need to be maintained, cryogenic polypropylene labels are used.

“With the printers they had installed, they were having problems with registration and print quality, primarily due to the small size of the labels,” says Dana Ritchie, principal at PaladinID LLC, a Laconia, N.H.-based specialist in barcode labeling. “It was a label and ribbon issue, a clarity and quality issue.”

Along with registration issues, the legacy printers were having problems with label drift. Further, consistency of printhead pressure was problematic: operators had to make a judgment regarding how much head pressure to apply; consequently, the manual setting could easily vary from operator to operator. This could very well affect consistency of print.

Solution

Ritchie recommended a switch to the Datamax-O’Neil Performance Series 1120n Near-Edge printer, which he describes as “designed for this kind of challenging application.” The first of printer was installed in August 2011. Three more have been purchased subsequently; and as the company phases out the balance of its legacy printers, it’s committed to replacing them with the 1120n.

“Because the 1120n is a near-edge printer, it does a fantastic job on the polypropylene labels,” says Ritchie. “It was designed for thicker and hard-to-image materials.” The 1120n’s near-edge printhead increases reliability and provides clean, crisp graphics and ladder barcodes, which results in a higher scan rating. Further, it has a one-million inch or one-year printhead warranty—twice that of most printhead warranties on the market today.
