Zebra’s MP6000 POS Scanner Helps Retails Speed Checkout and Improve Customer Satisfaction

Posted August 19, 2016

Zebra MP6000 Barcode ScannersDigimarc Corporation has announced that Zebra has enabled its MP6000 multi-plane bioptic imager to detect Digimarc Barcodes, driving faster retail checkout. Digimarc Barcodes, part of the Digimarc Discover platform, are not visible to consumers and can be incorporated into virtually any form of media, including product packaging, without taking space compared with traditional UPC barcodes or QR codes.

By deploying the Digimarc Embedded Software Development Kit (SDK), Zebra’s MP6000 bioptic imager allows retailers to scan Digimarc Barcodes on product packaging as well as traditional paper-based 1D barcodes and 2D mobile coupons on shoppers’ smartphones. The fully integrated solution can significantly reduce checkout time by increasing the average number of items scanned per minute, helping to improve operating margins, customer satisfaction and cashier productivity for retailers.

“Together with Digimarc, we’re offering a solution to quickly scan items without having to find and position the traditional barcode toward the reader, resulting in cost savings for retailers and better experiences for store associates and their customers,” said Bob Sanders, general manager and senior vice president of data capture solutions, Zebra Technologies. “Consumers will benefit from shorter wait times at the cash register and find that self-checkout is simple, quick and easy.”

“Zebra creates innovative solutions that make shopping a seamless and easy experience for consumers,” said Sean Calhoon, vice president of product management, Digimarc. “They are a respected original equipment manufacturer with a global footprint. Their adoption of the Digimarc platform is helping retailers who are adopting Digimarc Barcode to create a more efficient retail environment.”

Zebra’s MP6000 is the latest product release from a major retail hardware OEM that can read Digimarc Barcodes on product packaging, deli labels, cash register receipts and similar retail and grocery applications.

Top Ten Reasons Retailers Upgrade to Area-Imagers

Posted January 27, 2016

Traditional laser scanners read linear barcodes at the point-of-sale, a technology that greatly simplified checkout. But today’s highly developed area-imaging scanners enable greater capability and flexibility, putting far more productivity into the hands of retail employees and allowing for revenue-generating mobile marketing initiatives.

With these advantages, it’s no wonder VDC’s 2013 Report forecasts area-imaging scanners sales to grow at a rate of 13.4% for the next three years, compared to the expected 7.3% decline for laser-based scanners over the time period. Imaging technology is firmly established as a cost-effective, durable, technologically capable alternative to laser-based systems. Plus, imagers are capable of supporting retailer’s mobile marketing programs, capturing mobile coupons right off customers’ smartphone screens or automatically collecting their information from ID cards for loyalty program auto-enrollment.

Enable Revenue Generating Mobile Marketing Programs
The Internet and mobile broadband service have created new shopping channels for consumers, and new competition for brick and mortar retailers. At the same, a slow growth economy is limiting expansion of disposable income. Innovative retailers are fighting fire with fire, improving their e-commerce presence and adopting the consumer’s mobile phone as a new marketing medium. Promotions sent via SMS text message or via loyalty apps increase shopping visits, generating both immediate incremental revenue and improving long-term share of wallet. The most commonly used technology to electronically identify loyal shoppers and redeem mobile coupons are 2D barcodes rendered on mobile phone screens. And that requires a high performance, area-imaging barcode scanner at the point-of-sale.
